We are looking for a person who can assist our teams to ensure that we continue to provide a welcoming and safe environment for the Inpatient Mental Health Unit and Emergency Department at Nelson Hospital, as well as at Alexandra Hospital in Richmond. As a Patient Support and Security Worker you will focus on working with staff to best meet the needs of patients and their whānau accessing our services.
As this is a casual position you will be working on an as required basis covering staff leave across all shifts. Please note that there are no minimum guaranteed hours of work associated with casual employment.
Our Patient Support & Security Workers cover a 7 day week roster.
Standard shifts are:
- 4.30PM to 12.30AM – Wāhi Oranga(Inpatient mental health unit)
- 8.00PM to 4.30AM – Emergency Department
- 3.30PM to 10.30PM – Alexandra Hospital
It would be ideal if, as a casual employee, you were able to cover the full range of shifts above. The majority of your shifts are likely to be associated with Wāhi Oranga.

You will be the type of person who works in a rational and calm manner and who has the skills and experience to effectively de-escalate difficult situations and promote a safe and therapeutic environment. You will be able to relate well to patients and their visitors. You will be able to work with the clinical team and follow directions.
Previous experience in security, or a related industry is preferred. However, this is not essential as training will be provided.
Additionally you will have:
- empathy and a non-judgemental attitude towards patients and members of the public
- the ability to relate with ease to people from a variety of different cultures and backgrounds
- the ability to recognise and pass on issues that may affect patient welfare
- a good level of physical fitness and mobility.
